Dental implants are the gold-standard restoration for missing teeth. However, when recovering from your dental implant surgery, you must follow all of your post-surgery instructions. From when to take any prescription medications, to how to carefully clean the surgical sites, you must follow your dentist’s instructions. This includes abiding by a soft-food diet temporarily. Here are suggestions for what to eat after dental implant surgery.
What to Eat: Dental Implant Surgery Day
Before your surgery to place dental implants, you must avoid eating or drinking anything at all after midnight the night before your procedure. However, please check with your surgeon for specific instructions as this could vary. You may brush and floss your teeth normally before your surgery. You should also take any prescribed medications as instructed by your dentist.
After your procedure is complete, you are welcome to eat and drink, albeit with restrictions.
On the day of your procedure, you should avoid spicy, acidic, extremely hot, or hard, crunchy, crusty, or chewy foods.
Instead, you’ll need to eat very soft foods, with a spoon or a fork. Straws are strictly prohibited, as the sucking motion can dislodge blood clots. Foods that are soft enough to eat on the day of your dental implant surgery include:
- Yogurt
- Smoothies
- Mashed potatoes
- Pudding
- Lukewarm smooth soups and broths
- Protein shakes
- Oatmeal
- Cooked cereal (Cream of Wheat)
- Mashed Sweet potatoes
- Mashed fruit (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries)
- Eggs
- Cottage cheese
- Ice cream
- Jello
What to Eat in the Days Immediately Following Dental Implant Surgery
The day after your dental implant surgery, you may wish to add in chewable, but still soft foods. As you progress in your recovery, you may wish to add foods such as:
- Cooked fish
- Tender meats
- Pasta
- Macaroni and cheese
- Sauteed spinach, kale
- Boiled or steamed soft vegetables
- Pancakes
- Soft breads, muffins
Foods & Beverages To Avoid After Dental Implant Surgery
There are several foods you must avoid for at least the first few days following dental implant surgery. These include:
- Seeds and nuts
- Crunchy breasts, pizza crust
- Chips, pretzels, popcorn
- Tough to chew meats
- Alcohol
- Hot coffee, tea, cocoa
Other foods that may cause discomfort while you heal include acidic or citrusy foods and juices, hot foods, spicy foods, and sweet foods. For the first few days, err on the side of bland and soft, so as not to irritate the surgical sites. In addition, do not use a straw, smoke, or vape after dental surgery, to allow the surgery sites to heal.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don’t feel like eating after dental implant surgery?
This is not uncommon. However, it is important that you stay hydrated, and receive proper nutrition. Drink plenty of water, and try a protein smoothie, or a meal replacement shake to ensure you’re getting enough fluids and nutrients.
How long do I have to wait to eat normally after dental implant surgery?
Most people resume normal eating habits in about one week. But, listen to your body. If you’re most comfortable eating softer foods for longer, that is perfectly fine. You may feel most comfortable gradually introducing tougher foods over time.
